Professor David Ciarlo Wins German Studies Association Book Prize

David CiarloDavid Ciarlo's book, Advertising Empire:  Race and Visual Culture in Imperial Germany was awarded the Book Prize of the German Studies Association.  This prize, for the best book in History and the Social Sciences, is awarded only every other year.  Advertising Empire traces the visual history of black figures in early German commercial culture from the 1850s onwards, and shows how the emerging forces of mass-produced advertising transformed exotic images into racist icons.
